House Party at Biltmore Estate When the Vanderbilts were in residence at Biltmore House, they often hosted house parties for their friends. Now you can enjoy a similar unique experience with a group of interesting, like-minded people who will soon be your friends! On March 8 to 11, 2009 at The Inn on Biltmore Estate, The Appalachian Institution will host a "Winter House Party" featuring an exciting series of lectures on "America's Gilded Age", an epoch which lasted roughly from 1868 to 1900 and spawned events and circumstances which fostered the success of great business leaders like Cornelius Vanderbilt, and the opulence on view at Biltmore House and Estate, One of the world's foremost experts on the period, Dr. Charles W. Calhoun, will be the speaker. Dr. Calhoun received his BA at Yale University and earned MA, MPhil and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. A past President of The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, he is currently Professor of History at East Carolina University. The "house party" is a collaboration between The Biltmore Company and The Appalachian Institution, Inc. to bring prominent scholars to The Biltmore Estate on an occasional basis to lecture on topics of historical interest. "House party" guests will be resident at The Inn on Biltmore Estate. The package includes accommodations, a lavish welcome banquet, a lunch at The Deer Park Restaurant and the Chef's Breakfast Buffet each morning, as well as a cocktail reception or wine tasting each evening. The Program includes twelve hours of lecture and discussion, with fine entertainment every evening (including a rare concert in Biltmore House). Throughout the Houseparty, guests will enjoy free access to Biltmore House and its vast Estate, including an evening guided tour after the House is closed to the general public. In particular, there are the many pleasures of The Inn, which will have just completed a complete refurbishing prior to your arrival: the magnificent Biltmore Estate landscape, luxurious accommodations, fine dining, an attentive staff and all the other amenities of this world class hotel. A wide variety of additional activities such as the spa, golf, fly-fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, etc. are also available at an additional charge. And if the life of a country grandee doesn't hold enough excitement for you, the vibrant City of Asheville awaits just outside the gates to the Estate! So do yourself a favor.
